questions about charging
There are 2 kinds of electric current: AC and DC.
Conventional charging points (home and public) offer alternating current (AC).
Fast charging points, which can be found on motorways, offer direct current (DC).
The battery of an E-Tech electric commercial vehicle runs on DC current, so the vehicle’s charger itself converts AC to DC when your car is plugged into a conventional charging point.
Like most of the electrical appliances that you have at home, an electric car charges on the mains via a cable. This cable is supplied with the car and can be plugged in at home, at your workplace, at a home charging point, or at a public charging point. With an optional cable, you can also charge from a domestic socket.
Technical info:
- the home charging point can deliver up to 7.4 kW single-phase AC or up to 22 kW three-phase AC;
- suitable cables are called mode 3 type 2 cables (for a terminal) or Flexicharger cables (for a standard socket).
Practical tips:
- on a daily basis, we recommend charging your commercial vehicle to 80% to optimise charging time and improve battery life;
- Only plan charging to 100% before a long journey to ensure maximum driving range on the road.
The charging frequency for an electric commercial vehicle depends on a number of factors.
Factor no. 1: the model of car.
Each model is different and so the driving range may vary. Renault E-Tech electric commercial vehicles have been designed to offer a range of up to 381 miles according to the WLTP standard¹.
Factor no. 2: usage.
Road type, driving style, traffic and weather conditions (temperatures) all affect energy consumption.
These factors make it impossible to suggest a “general” charging frequency.
However, here are a few practical tips:
- refer to the indications on the dashboard;
- For everyday use, we recommend that you avoid going below the 15% threshold or above 80% of the battery’s capacity;
- only charge to 100% before a long journey;
- whenever possible, try to charge at home during off-peak hours to make the most of cheaper electricity (off-peak hours available by contacting your electricity supplier).
*according to the WLTP standard for the Scenic E-Tech electric model with 87 kWh long-range battery
The maximum charging power permitted by an E-Tech electric commercial vehicle varies according to the battery’s state of charge (%) and temperature (°C).
If the temperature of the Lithium-ion battery is too low, the battery management system will occasionally limit charging performance to ensure component safety. This protection will lengthen the time needed for a charge, especially on DC ultra-fast charging points in winter.
To resolve this phenomenon, Renault provides a battery preheating (or preconditioning) system (depending on model and version) to optimise the charging power and therefore the charging time.
